Fire safety starts at home. This October, Western Coventry Fire District encourages you to take a few minutes with your family to check your alarms, practice your escape plan, and reduce common fire hazards.

Six steps to a safer home

1. Test your smoke alarms. Test them every month. Install alarms on every level, inside each bedroom, and outside sleeping areas. Replace alarms when they are 10 years old.
2. Practice your escape plan. Identify two ways out of every room, keep exits clear, and choose an outdoor meeting place. Practice with everyone in your household at least twice a year.
3. Stay with your cooking. Remain in the kitchen when frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling. Turn off the burner if you leave, and keep towels and other items that can burn away from the stove.
4. Give heaters space. Keep anything that can burn at least three feet from heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves. Turn portable heaters off before leaving the room or going to bed.
5. Check your chimney and heating system. Arrange a professional inspection and address needed repairs before using your fireplace, wood stove, or furnace for the season.
6. Clean your dryer’s lint filter. Remove lint after every load and keep electrical cords in good condition.
